Find Life and Health: Pay Attention to God’s Word

Proverbs 4:20–23
“My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.
Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.
For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.
Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”

In these four verses, Solomon gives his son direct and practical instruction.  Yet this counsel is not merely ancient parental advice.  The Holy Spirit included it in the inspired and preserved Word of God, making it profitable and authoritative for believers today.  The passage teaches us how to receive God’s Word and why our response to it matters.

The Central Command: Attend to God’s Word

Solomon begins with the admonition, “attend to my words.”  To attend means more than simply to hear.  It means to listen carefully, receive the instruction, and apply it to life.  The phrases that follow show us three practical ways to give God’s Word the attention it deserves.

1. Listen with Care

First, Solomon says, “incline thine ear.”  The picture is of someone leaning toward the speaker because the message is too important to miss.  In the same way, believers must deliberately draw near to the Word of God through faithful reading, careful study, and attentive listening to biblical preaching and teaching.  A casual approach—superficial reading or apathetic hearing—does not reflect an earnest desire to know and obey God’s instruction.

2. Keep Scripture in View

Second, Solomon says, “Let them not depart from thine eyes.”  Just as a motorist depends on a map and road signs for direction, the Christian must look continually to the Word of God for guidance.  A map names the right destination, while road signs give necessary instructions about the route, speed, dangers, and conditions ahead.  A driver who ignores them soon meets confusion or harm.  Likewise, a believer who neglects Scripture will lose clear spiritual direction.

3. Guard the Word in Your Heart

Third, Solomon says to keep God’s words “in the midst of thine heart.”  Verse 23 adds that the heart must be kept “with all diligence.”  In Scripture, the heart is the control center of a person’s inner life, the place of thought, affection, desire, and decision.  To keep the heart is to guard it carefully.  That requires purposeful effort because the world continually offers distractions that compete with God’s truth and lead toward empty and destructive ends.

Life and Health Through Obedience

Solomon attaches a gracious promise to this admonition: God’s words are “life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.”  Every person seeks life and well-being, but the world offers only temporary satisfaction and false promises.  As Ecclesiastes shows, life pursued apart from God ends in vanity.  Humanity was created to walk with God in holiness and obedience, but sin brought death, disease, and destruction.  Lasting joy, peace, and satisfaction are found only in fellowship with the Lord and submission to His Word.

More than guidance for physical life, the Word of God points us to the new life that continues for all eternity.  Physical existence without eternal life is not the fullness of life God intends.  True life is found through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and is lived out by walking with God in righteousness, obedience, and fellowship.  Therefore, let us incline our ears, keep Scripture before our eyes, and guard its truth in our hearts with all diligence.
